Brief NewsLu Yongxiang Meets J. Campbell On Sep. 20, Lu Yongxiang, Co-Chair of the InterAcademy Council (IAC) and President of CAS, met with the visiting Executive Director of IAC, Dr. J. Campbell. Lu Yongxiang listened to Dr. Campbell¡¯s report about review of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) by IAC and progress of IAC Water Programme. Lu Yongxiang expressed satisfaction with the IPCC review report assigned by the United Nations and the work of the Secretariat of IAC. They also discussed and reached a consensus on the agenda of the next board meeting of IAC, the future development strategy of IAC and the contents of research work on water issues. Lu Yongxiang Meets Seiji Murata On Aug. 23, Lu Yongxiang, President of CAS, met with the visiting delegation to China led by Seiji Murat, Chairman of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization of Japan (NEDO). Lu Yongxiang said that CAS and NEDO have complementary advantages and good prospects for cooperation in the field of new energy. Lu also stressed that the special visit by Seiji Murat and his delegation to China and their participation in the symposium on the cooperation in new energy jointly held by NEDO and CAS is important to strengthen cooperation in terms energy technology and to actively cope with the challenge of global climate change. Bai Chunli Visits Cuba and Costa Rica Bai Chunli, Executive Vice President of CAS, and his entourage paid a visit to Cuba and Costa Rica from Sep. 6 to 11. During their visit to Cuba, the delegation attended the Third International Symposium on Nano Science and Technology. Bai Chunli delivered a keynote speech entitled ¡°Development Opportunity and Challenge of Nano-Technology¡± at the symposium. There were about 80 scholars from 20 countries attended the symposium. The delegation also visited related institutions of Cuba. During the visit, Bai Chunli also met with Jose Miyar Barruecos, Minister for Science, Technology and Environment of Cuba and Dr. Fidel Castro D¨ªaz-Balart, Scientific Advisor to the State Affair Committee of Cuba respectively. During their visit to Costa Rica, the delegation visited the University of Costa Rica, National Institute of Biodiversity,etc. Bai Chunli also delivered a lecture on the progress in nano-science in China at the University of Costa Rica. Jiang Mianheng Meets Australian S&T Delegation On Aug. 2, Jiang Mianheng, Vice President of CAS, met with the Australian S&T delegation in Shanghai. The Australian S&T delegation, composed of Prof. Penny Sackett, Chief Scientist of Australia, Ms Patricia Kelly, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research of the Commonwealth of Australia, Prof. Robin Batterham, President of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, Prof. Jim Peacock, former chief scientist of Australia and former president of the Australian Academy of Sciences and other officials and scholars from Australia, who came to Shanghai to attend the China-Australia S&T Week and the 30th anniversary of China-Australia S&T cooperation. Fang Xin Meets Kokubun Yasuo On Aug. 6, Fang Xin, member of CAS Presidium, met with Kokubun Yasuo, Executive Vice President of the Yokohama National University of Japan and the Japanese delegation. Fan Xin had an in-depth discussion with the guests regarding transformation of technological results, education of personnel, innovation management of enterprises and recovery of risk capital. Li Jiayang Meets New UNESCO Assistant Director-General On Sep. 10, Li Jiayang, Vice President of CAS, met with Ms Kalonji, the newly appointed Assistant Director-General of UNESCO in charge of the Natural Science Sector, and her entourage. Both parties held in-depth discussion about the Third Pole Environment Program proposed by CAS scientists and unanimously agreed to continue to jointly push forward this program and strive to make it a ¡°flagship program¡± of UNESO. Both parties also exchanged views on advancing the establishement of the ¡°International Center on Using Space Technology for Cultural and Natural Heritages¡±. Li Jinghai Meets Arthur Ruf On Sep. 17, Li Jinghai, Vice President of CAS, met with Arthur Ruf, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations of Swiss Academy of Engineering Science, Rolf Hugli, Secretary-General of Swiss Academy of Engineering Science, and Xaver Edelmann, President of World Resources Forum, Davos. Li Jinghai specifically mentioned that the Second China-Swiss Workshop on S&T Cooperation jointly sponsored by CAS and Swiss Department of Education and Research recently, and highly appreciated the progress and prospects of the S&T cooperation between China and Swiss. Prof. Arthur Ruf wished to further strengthen the cooperation between China and Swiss in the fields of nanotechnology, biotechnology, energy, industrial technology and education based on the signing of the memorandum of understanding by Swiss Academy of Engineering Science, Swiss Academy of Sciences and CAS. Mr. Xaver Edelmann, President of World Resources Forum, Davos, briefed the progress of preparation for 2011 World Resources Forum, Davos. |
