Lu Yongxiang Meets President of Australian Academy of Science

On Sep. 12, Lu Yongxiang, Vice-President of the Standing Committee of the National People¡¯s Congress of China and President of CAS met with Kurt Lambeck, President of the Australian Academy of Science. They held talks on comprehensive matters about Sino-Australian cooperation in S&T research and the Sino-Australian S&T Symposium. Lu extended his wishes to strengthen the S&T exchange and cooperation between China and Australia. Lambeck agreed with Lu, expressing that Sino-Australian cooperation in S&T research is complementary and indispensable, and the current joint labs and research centers should be promoted to a new level on basis of the consistent cooperation.

Sino-Russian Joint Lab Unveiled

On Sep. 7, the signing ceremony for the Sino-Russian Joint Lab for Rare Earth Functional Materials between the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, CAS and the Nikolaev Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB-RAS) was held in Siberia, Russia. The ceremony was chaired by Prof. Zhang Hongjie, President of SB-RAS Dobretsov, President of CAS Changchun Branch and Dr. V. M. Fomin, Secretary of SB-RAS signed the agreement on behalf of their respective parities. State Councilor Chen Zhili and Mr. Tolokonshy Governor of New Siberia Tolokonsky co-unveiled the Sino-Russian Joint Lab for Rare Earth Functional Materials. The Joint Lab shall be dedicated to topics of green separation chemistry and clean engineering of rare earth, rare earth functional materials, rare earth structural materials, rare earth catalyzer, rare earth biological effect and chemical biology, rare earth chemistry and physics (crystal chemistry and theory of chemical bond).

Large Science Facility Theoretical Physics Research Center Established

On the morning of Sep. 6, an assembly was held at the Institute of High Energy Physics for the establishment of the Large Science Facility Theoretical Physics Research Center (GSITPRC), a non-independent institution of CAS, was established. Bai Chunli, Executive Vice-President of CAS, Shen Wenqing, Vice Minister of the National Natural Science Fund and some 20 CAS members presented at the assembly. Bai stated in his speech that the research center serves as an important measure to promote cooperation between institutes and interdisciplinary of theory and experiment. He wished GSITPRC would provide theoretic instruction for the experiment and future development of large science facilities and play an active role in talent fostering and youngsters¡¯ activities.
