New Year Message from President

The year of 2006 is the first year to implement the China's 11th Five-Year Program for the National Economic and Social Development, the first year to implement the third phase of the "Knowledge Innovation Program" of CAS and the first year to implement the Outline of the National Long and Medium Term Program for Science and Technology Development, and a year essential to the reform and development of CAS.

CAS will do their best to seize the opportunity and rise to meet the challenges, by making more efforts on the home-grow innovation, improving institutional system and operational mechanism, and promoting harmonious development based on the scientific approach for development. Utmost attention will be paid to realize the objective of “four firsts”, which is to build the Academy into an institution features first-class S&T achievements, first-class benefits, first-class management and first-class R&D workforce of talents, so as to make continuous and systematic fundamental, strategic and forward-looking contributions in major scientific and technological innovations to the overall realization of the magnificent objective for building a moderate prosperous nation, a harmonious society of socialism and an innovative nation.

President of CAS Heads a Delegation to Attend 16 th TWAS General Assembly

A Chinese Delegation of TWAS Fellows headed by Lu Yongxiang, Vice President of TWAS and President of CAS attended the 16 th General Assembly of the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) held from Nov. 29 to Dec. 3 in Alexandria, Egypt. The delegation consists of Bai Chunli, member of TWAS and Executive Vice President of CAS, and more than 30 other Chinese fellows of TWAS.

At the meeting, on invitation, President Lu delivered a work-report on the Regional Office for East and Southeast Asia of TWAS and a conference lecture entitled "the Inspiring History of Physics in the Last One Hundred Years: Retrospect and Prospect".

At the Assembly, 50 scientists from 22 countries and regions, including Zhu Rixiang and other 9, from the Chinese mainland and five from Taiwan, China, were elected fellows of TWAS. Li Jiayang and other three Chinese scientists were awarded the Prize of TWAS.

Ceremony to Commemorate Cooperation between SIPO and EPO

On Dec. 5, Cao Jianlin, Vice President of CAS attended the celebration ceremony of the 20 th anniversary for the friendly cooperation between the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) and the European Patent Office (EPO) in the Great Hall of the People.

On the evening of Dec. 6, Alain Pompidou , Director of the European Patent Office (EPO), and Mrs. Pompidou hosted a banquet in the Diaoyutai Hotel to celebrate the 20 th anniversary of the friendly cooperation between the SIPO and EPO. Lu Yongxiang, President of CAS and Mrs. Lu, Tian Lipu, Director General of SIPO , and Wang Jingchuan, former Director General of SIPO were present at the banquet on invitation, accompanied by the EU Associate Ambassador to China and officials of EPO.
