Brief NewsBai Chunli Elected Danish Academy Foreign Member On March 29, Bai Chunli was elected foreign member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters at its meeting of members. Dr. Henrik Slaatorn, Secretary of the Danish Academy recently wrote a letter congratulating Bai Chunli for being elected. Bai Chunli Held Tele-conference with NSF Director A tele-conference was held by Bai Chunli and Subra Suresh, Director of US National Science Foundation (NSF) on May 11, regarding the issues concerned with the peak meeting on appraisal of global science value to be held from May 14 to 15 in Washington, D.C. In the meantime, Bai congratulated Subra Suresh for being elected Member of US National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Zhang Yaping Present at CAS Max Planck Meeting The CAS and German Max Planck Society jointly sponsored a conference in Shanghai for the selection of directors, members of the young scientist group and the group leader of the Paul-Gerson-Unna on May 17. Zhang Yaping, CAS Vice President and Lu Yonglong, CAS Director General for International cooperation and Herbert Jaeckle, Vice President of the Max Planck Society were present at the meeting. Participants of the meeting included scientists from China, USA, Germany, Russia, Israel and Turkey. The selection meeting was co-chaired by Chen Xiaoya, Director General of the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences and Lothar Willmitzeer, Scientific and Managing Director of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology. During their stay in Shanghai, a working meeting was also held by Zhang Yaping and Herbert Jaeckle, in which a consensus was reached regarding principles for the selection and the further cooperation between the two institutions, while someother matters of common concern were also discussed. Fan Xin Meets USPTO Director On June 1, Fang Xin, member of the CAS Presidium met with David Kappos, the visiting director of the US Patent and Trade Mark Office and his entourage. Fang Xin reviewed the activities in cooperation and exchanges between CAS and the American scientists, and relevant S&T institutions, briefed to guests about the management practices of the CAS knowledge properties, while proposals were also made regarding cooperation in application of patents and training of relevant personnel with USPTO. Both parties agreed to further promote relevant cooperation in the future. |
