China¡¯s Dragon Dives Deeper

China¡¯s first manned submersible reached the depth of 5143 meters under the sea level in its third test dive on July 28th after the previous 4000-meter and 5000-meter tests. The Shenyang Institute of Automation, CAS is one of the key institutions for the design and development of the submersible. The successful 5000-meter test dive of the Jiaolong submersible demonstrates that China has become the fifth country able to dive 5000 meters below the sea level with manned submersibles following the United States, Russia, Japan and France. The test mission will pave the way for a record-breaking of 7,000-meter test dive in the next year. On that very day, Bai Chunli, President of CAS, wrote to congratulate the Shenyang Institute of Automation and the Institute of Acoustics, CAS on Jiaolong¡¯s successful mission.

Battery to Support Renewable Energy Development

A new type of energy storage battery has been undergoing a failure-free operation for 1400 days, and successfully completed a 10,000 charge-discharge circulation in a test evaluation period. The successful development of the energy storage battery will surely play a substantial role in driving and popularizing wind and solar power application£¬achieving energy conservation and industry transformation goals. The new type of energy storage battery system is a indigenous innovative step oriented to best use of renewable resources and to decrease the carbon consumption, which is part of the continuous efforts made by the Dalian Physics and Chemical Research Institute, CAS.
