Baosteel-LanzaTech: Off-gas to Ethanol Engineering Project Triggered

On Mar. 27, the opening ceremony for the Baosteel-LanzaTech-CAS pilot project of steel mill off-gases to ethanol was held in Shanghai. Bai Chunli, President of CAS, Tony Blair, former Prime Minister of the UK and consultant to Khosla Ventures, Ai Baojun, Vice Mayor of Shanghai and He Wenbo, General Manager of the Baosteel were present at the ceremony. Bai Chunli, in his speech, pointed out that the bio-industry is one of the seven strategic emerging industries determined by the Chinese government, while the biological energy resources are the key area for China's bio-industry. China, being the largest steel-producer in the world; has also urgent needs for biological fuels. To promote the commercialization of the steel mill off-gases to ethanol technology will play a constructive and exemplary role in realizing the goal of energy-saving and emission-reduction in the steel industry, and in the meantime enable large-scale production of biological fuel. The steel mill off-gases to ethanol technology developed by the LanzaTech is based on microorganism fermentation technology. It is the only enterprise in the world that possesses the core technology. With technical back-up of CAS, the Baosteel has begun to introduce the technology in a way of assimilation and re-innovation. The current pilot project with a production capacity of 300 tons of ethanol will provide scientific data for the industrialization. Based on this project, a commercial ethanol plant with an annual production capacity of 100,000 tons will be constructed in due time.
