Brief NewsLu Yongxiang Meets Gruss On Feb. 7, 2010, Lu Yongxiang, President of CAS, met with Prof. Gruss, the visiting Chairman of the Max Planck Society, and his entourage. Lu Yongxiang confirmed that the practice in the past 5 years proved the decision of CAS to establish a partner institute with the Max Planck Society was absolutely correct. He introduced about the new institutes recently established by CAS to Gruss. Chairman Gruss said he was satisfied with the great progress made by the CAS-MPG Partner Institute for Computational Biology in the past 5 years and hoped it would attract more talents to work in China. Gruss also briefed work of the new institutes established by the Max Planck Society, including the Institute of Synthetic Biology, the Institute of Intelligent Automation System and the Institute of Empirical Aesthetics and the Institute for International Procedural Law in Luxembourg. Both parties also exchanged views on the ¡°Science Express¡± exhibition in China and other issues. Bai Chunli Present at 3rd IEEE Nano Conference On Jan. 4, 2010, Bai Chunli, executive vice president of CAS, attended the 3rd IEEE International Nano-Electronics Conference (INEC) in Hong Kong and delivered a special lecture ¡°Surface Modification and Functionality Investigated by STM¡± to the conference. Nearly 900 representatives from 35 countries and regions attended this conference sponsored by the City College of Hong Kong. Topics discussed in the conference included nano-fabrication, nano-electronics, nano-optoelectronics, nano-biology, nano-physics and other frontier issues that attract worldwide attention. The conference specifically arranged a one-day discussion on the development of nano-science in China. Bai Chunli, Zhan Wenlong Meet Conn On Dec. 17, 2009, Bai Chunli, executive vice president of CAS, met with Dr. Robert W. Conn, new president, Dr, Miyoung Chun, vice president for science project, of the US Kavli Foundation and their entourage. Zhan Wenlong, vice president of CAS and Lu Yonglong, Director General of the International Cooperation Bureau also attended the meeting. Dr. Conn said that at present, the Kavli Foundation mainly focuses on and supports scientific research in four fields, including theoretical physics, astrophysics, nano-science and neuroscience. Bai Chunli pointed out that the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics China (KITPC) serves as an open international exchange and cooperation platform of the Institute of Theoretical Physics, CAS. He hoped that KITPC will further strengthen its communication with other 15 Kavli institutes, make greater efforts in interdisciplinarity and give full play to its accumulated superiority in theoretical physics and forerunning radiation effects in the fields of astrophysics, nano-science, neuroscience and other inter-disciplines. Jiang Mianheng Meets Takefumi Fukumizu On Jan. 7, 2010, Jiang Mianheng, vice president of CAS, met with Takefumi Fukumizu, vice president of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and the visiting NEDO delegation. Both parties agreed to jointly advance mutually beneficial cooperation in more areas. Fang Xin Present at International Symposium on Women The International Symposium on Women, Innovation and Development was held in UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France from Jan. 18 to 19, 2010. Over 40 representatives from some international organizations and national institutions attended this meeting jointly sponsored by the Third World Organization for Women in Sciences (TWOWS), the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development Gender Advisory Board (UNCSTD-GAB) and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS). Fang Xin, vice chairman of TWOWS and member of CAS Presidium, attended the symposium. In the meeting, Fang Xin introduced the active role that China¡¯s female S&T workers have played in terms of scientific innovation. Yin Hejun Meets Yukihide Hayashi On Dec. 15, 2009, Yin Hejun, vice president of CAS,? met with Yukihide Hayashi, the visiting vice president of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the JAXA delegation. Yin Hejun expressed that CAS has obtained outstanding achievements in space science and astronomy in the past 10 years, and highly commented the effective cooperation between CAS and JAXA. He wished that China and Japan will become good partners in space science and astronomy and suggested that the two parties may have a still closer cooperation in this regard. |
