Applied TechnologyRobots to Operate in AntarcticRobots able to move across ice and snow surface or fly in low altitude have been put on board of the Xuelong icebreaker and sent to the Zhongshan Station at Antarctic via Australia on Nov. 27. Serving for Antarctic scientific survey, these special ˇ°teammatesˇ± jointly developed by the Polar Research Institute of China, the Shenyang Institute of Automation, CAS and the Beijing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics will aid scientists in the field experiments and research to be carried out in the Antarctic. CASIA Translation System Ranks First in International EvaluationThe International Workshop on Spoken Language Translation (IWSLT) was held from Oct. 15 to 16, 2007 in Trento, Italy. 15 language conversation systems developed by several famous institutions including CMU and MIT from U.S., RWTH Aachen University from Germany, ITC from Italy, and NICT-ATR and NTT from Japan were evaluated on the event. In the manual evaluations, the first rank went to the CASIA Phrase-Based Statistical Machine Translation System for IWSLT 2007 distinguished itself and took the first rank among the 15 candidates designed for speech-to-speech conversation either from Chinese to English, or Arabic to English, Japanese to English, and Italian to English. The feat indicates that the Institute of Automation, CAS is in the leadership of the world in terms of speech-to-speech (S2S) translation system research and development.
