Highlights of ExchangesSino-UK Training Course on Biotechnology From Jun. 1 to 12, the Sino-UK Summer Vacation Training Course on Biotechnological Control and Policies co-sponsored by the Institute of Policy and Management of CAS and ESRC Genomics Network was conducted in Beijing. In the training course, 12 professors and 22 trainees from China and UK discussed control and policies on organ transplantation, artificial blood, genetically modified food, test tube meat, nano-biological products and other emerging biotechnologies. Prof. Mu Rongping from the Institute of Policy and Management and Dr. Peter Robbins, Deputy Director of INNOGEN Center of UK were chief sponsors of this summer training course. The 23 trainees came from the University of Edinburgh, University of Cardiff and University of Exeter, and CAS, Beijing University, University of Science and Technology of China and the Institute of Policy and Management. Mr. Chris Godwin, Director of the Office of the British Research Council in Beijing attended the opening ceremony of the summer training course. Third World Seminar on Protein The two-day ˇ°Seminar on Frontier Method and Technology of Proteinˇ± co-sponsored by CAS and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing WorldŁ¨TWASŁ©was successfully completed on Jul. 17 at the Institute of Biophysics, CAS. This seminar aimed to provide an opportunity of research and exchange to young scientists from developing countries and strengthen their research capability in the field of protein to enable them to contribute to the development of protein technology as well as life science in their own countries. Over 40 scientists from more than 20 countries and regions, including Pakistan, India, Egypt, Moldova, Georgia, etc. attended this seminar upon invitation. Wetlands Conservation Attracts More Attention The Wetland Ecology Committee of the Chinese Ecological Society signed a cooperation agreement on knowledge management on wetlands and conservation and rational utilization of wetlands with the Society of Wetland ScientistsŁ¨SWSŁ©in last May. Lu Xianguo, Secretary General of the Wetland Ecology Committee of the Chinese Ecological Society and research fellow of the Northeast Institute of Geography and Agroecology, CAS and Prof. Christopher Craft, Chairman of SWS, signed the agreement on behalf of respective parties. Both parties wish to establish a formal partnership, carry out cooperation in various levels with all stakeholders and realize knowledge management on wetlands and conservation and rational utilization of wetlands related to human kind and nature.
