Brief News 2007 Nobel Laureates Forum Held in Beijing The 2007 Nobel Laureates Beijing Forum was held at the People¡¯s Congress Hall from Sep. 11 to 14. Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan gave a keynote speech at the opening ceremony and Wang Qishan, Mayor of the Beijing Municipal Government extended the welcome speech. Li Jinghai, CAS Vice-President, chaired forum, while Dr. Harold W. Kroto, the 1996 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and Professor of the University of Florida (USA) addressed to the forum on behalf of the foreign guests. During the 2007 Nobel Laureates Beijing Forum, under the everlasting theme of ¡°Human Kind¡¯s Harmony and Development¡±, exchanges and discussions were principally organized with emphasis on the topic of energy and environment. There were all together 9 Nobel laureates in fields of physics, chemistry and economy and 6 world renown scientists and experts present at the Forum. International Symposium on Women and Science Held On Aug. 16, the International Symposium on Women and Science was solemnly held in Beijing. The main topics of the Symposium included: China¡¯s women and science; the relationship between women and science; how to attract women into the field of scientific research; factors affecting women scientists¡¯ towards success; spreading scientific knowledge among women in the countryside, and the scientific development strategy in the future. Mme. Gu Xiulian, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People¡¯s Congress of China and Chairwoman of the All China Women¡¯s Feration, Prof. Lu Yongxiang, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People¡¯s Congress and President of CAS and Djemila, Chairman of the Third World Organization for Women in Science (TWOWS), Dr. Hassan, Executive Director of the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and Dr. Campbell Executive Director of the InterAcademy Council (IAC) were present at the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. This meeting was co-sponsored by CAS, TWOWS and TWAS, and supported by the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chinese Association of Science and Technology, and the All China Women¡¯s Feration. Representatives attending the meeting included guests from China, Egypt, Mexico, Malaysia, Yemen, Nigeria, Tanzania, Bolivia, India, Nepal, Botswana, the Philippines, Pakistan, Thailand, Mongolia, TWOWS, TWAS, and IAC. |
