International CooperationLu Yongxiang Meets Alan I Leshner, CEO of AAAS On the afternoon of Sep. 26, Lu Yongxiang, President of CAS met with Dr. Alan I. Leshner, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and publisher of Science Magazine. The two parties held a thorough talk about co-publishing the Chinese edition of selected articles for Science, and signed Memorandum of Cooperation on Co-Publishing the Chinese Edition of Selected Science between the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Bai Chunli Visits Denmark On Sep. 14, Bai Chunli, Executive Vice-President of CAS and his entourage paid a visit to the interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center of Aarhus University. The later has actively promoted the extensive cooperation in nanoscience between Denmark and China in recent years. Bai gave an academic lecture on China¡¯s advancement of nanoscience research, and the two parties also held a thorough talk of the contents for promoting and implementing cooperative research and exchange. On Sep. 16, Bai and his entourage visited the headquarters of Novo Nordisk in Copenhagen. Bai, on behalf of CAS, and Dr. Thomsen, Executive Vice-President and Chief Scientific Officer of Novo Nordisk signed a Supplementary Agreement on CAS-Novo Nordisk Appropriative Research Fund, which provided that in addition to the original CAS-Novo Nordisk Appropriative Research Fund, Novo Nordisk shall donate another 1 million US dollars to set up the CAS-Novo Nordisk Great Wall Professor Appropriative Research Fund. The award is dedicated to introducing high-level talents in protein field. 2nd CAS & Northern Europe S&T Forum Held in Sweden From Sep. 17 to 19, CAS & Northern Europe S&T Forum was held at Lund University, Sweden. There were over 120 experts and officials from CAS departments and institutes as well as officials and experts from Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland attended the forum. The meeting was chaired by Prof. Goran Bexell, President of Lund University. Prof. Bai Chunli, Executive Vice-President of CAS was present at the meeting and delivered an opening speech. During the meeting, Bai also held an official meeting with Mr. Halldor Asgrimsson, Secretary-General of Nordic Council of Ministers and former premier of Iceland. During his stay there, Bai also held official meetings with Inge Maerkedal, Danish Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation and other officials from the five northern European countries, who had paid special visits to Lund, including Vice-President of Finnish Academy of Sciences, Director of the Icelandic Center for Research, Senior Counselor of the Swedish Research Council and the Director of the International Cooperation Bureau of the Research Council of Norway. This is the first time CAS had official exchange with the most important research institutes of the five northern European countries. Both sides agreed to set up a united work group as soon as possible to discuss matters relating to the 3rd CAS & Northern Europe S&T Forum, which is to be held in China in 2008. Bai Chunli Visits Russia From Sep. 19 to 24, Bai Chunli, Executive Vice-President of CAS and his entourage paid a visit the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and other institutions of Russia on invitation. The visit was just taken place during the ¡°Year of China¡± in Russia, while CAS and RAS co-sponsored a Sino-Russian Symposium on Resources, Environment and Sustainable Development in Moscow from Sep. 17 to 20. Bai was present and addressed at the closing ceremony of the symposium. While in Kazan, Bai paid a visit to Mr. Pavlov, the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Tatarstan. Bai and Pavlov jointly signed the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Republic of Tatarstan of the Union of Russia. On Sep. 24, Bai attended, upon invitation, the 18th Mendeleev General and Applied Chemistry Assembly and delivered a special lecture.
CAS and Philips: Joint Lab on Molecular Medicine On Aug. 29, the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, CAS and Royal Philips Electronics signed a memorandum of cooperation, officially declaring that the Institute of Health Sciences and Royal Philips Electronics shall co-establish a joint laboratory to conduct cooperation in the frontier molecular medical research. The research of the joint laboratory shall focus on two areas: (1) discovering new biomarkers and (2) developing the next generation of in-vitro diagnosis technology. |
