Lu Yongxiang: Congratulation on Launching of Remote-sensing Satellite

At 11:22, Dec. 15, 2008, No. 5 remote-sensing satellite was successfully launched to the space by the Long March 4B Launch Vehicle at the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center (TSLC). Xi’an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics, CAS was responsible for the research and manufacturing of the satellite’s effective load. On Dec. 16, Lu Yongxiang, President of CAS wrote a congratulatory letter to the Institute, expressing his warmest congratulation and heartfelt consolation to all units and people involved in the task.

Bai Chunli Meets Choon Fong Shih

On Jan. 14, 2009, Bai Chunli, Executive Vice President of CAS, met with visiting Prof. Choon Fong Shih, President of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia and his encourage in Beijing. KAUST is currently under construction and will host a founding ceremony in September, 2009. With an in vestment of 10 billion US dollars, KAUST is located in the coastal Jeddah, west of Saudi Arabia.

Jiang Mianheng Visits Japan

From Jan. 15 to 21, 2009, Jang Mianheng, Vice-President of CAS, paid a visit to Japan with his entourage upon invitation of Akito Arima, President of Japan Science Foundation and ex-Minister of Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). During his stay in Japan, he visited some research organizations, such as MEXT and PARC. The delegation also held talks with Toichi Sakata, Vice Minister of MEXT. Both sides exchanged opinions on promotion of S & T policy study and project cooperation between the two sides.

USTC: New Page on Nuclear Education

On Jan. 10, 2009, the founding and unveiling ceremony was held for the School of Nuclear Science and Technology (SNST) co-built by the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and the Hefei Institute of Physical Science, CAS. Bai Chunli, Executive Vice President of CAS sent a congratulatory letter to SNST. Zhan Wenlong, Vice President of CAS, Hou Jianguo, President of USTC, and Wang Yingjian, Director General of the Hefei Institute of Physical Science co-unveiled the founding of SNST.

There are four departments in SNST, namely, the Department of Nuclear Energy Science and Engineering, the Department of Nuclear Technology and Applications, the Department of Physics of Nuclear Medicine and the Department of Nuclear Safety and Environment Protection. SNST has formed a full educational system composed of bachelor, master and doctor degree courses and established the national first level key discipline education on “Nuclear Science and Technology”. There are post-doctoral stations and an Innovation Center for Synchrotron Radiation Doctoral Students, approved by the Ministry of Education in SNST.
