Brief NewsLu Yongxiang Present at Nobel Laureates Forum On Nov. 11, Lu Yongxiang, President of CAS, delivered a keynote speech at the Opening Ceremony of the ”°Nobel Laureates Beijing Forum 2008”±. The Forum was held from Nov. 11 to 14 in Beijing with renowned guest speakers from many countries including 7 Nobel laureates and 4 Turing Award winners. The theme of the Forum is ”°Information & Innovation”±. Lu Yongxiang Delivered Key Speech on Science at STS Forum From Nov. 4 to 7, Lu Yongxiang, President of CAS, paid a visit to Japan upon invitation of Koji Omi, former Japanese Chancellor of the Exchequer and Honorary President of the fifth ”°Science and Technology in Society Forum”± (”°STS”± Forum). Lu was present at the Forum held in Kyoto and delivered a speech entitled ”°Future Development of Science and Technology”±. Later, Lu co-chaired a global conference for presidents of science academies with Dr. Hoffmann, President of the French Academy of Sciences. Bai Chunli Meets American Scientists On Oct. 14 evening, Bai Chunli, Executive Vice President of CAS, met with the American scientists who came to attend the International Workshop to Commemorate the 400th Anniversary of Invention of the Telescope (New Vision 400), including Prof. Charles Townes of the University of California at Berkeley, the laureate of Nobel Prize in Physics in 1964, Prof. Riccardo Giacconi of the Johns Hopkins University, Nobel Prize laureate in Physics in 1992, and Dr. John Templeton Jr., Chairman of the Templeton Foundation of American. Jiang Mianheng Present at Signing Ceremony for Renewable Energy Coop On Nov. 12 afternoon, Jiang Mianheng, Vice-President of CAS, met with Dan Arvizu, Director of the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and other American guests. Jiang was also present at the signing ceremony of memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between the Institute of Electrical Engineering (IEE), CAS and UNRL. Li Jinghai Reelected AASA President From Oct. 14 to 17, 2008, the eighth General Assembly of the Association of Academies of Sciences in Asia (AASA) was held in Ankara, Capital of Turkey. At the meeting, Li Jinghai, Vice President of CAS, was reelected President of the new session of the AASA Board, and his terms of office is from October 2008 to October 2010 following his tenure of president from 2006 to 2008. Qin Dahe Honored IMO Prize On Oct. 28, the Awarding Ceremony of the 53rd International Meteorological Organization (IMO) Prize was held in the Great Hall of the People. Qin Dahe, member of CAS and Director General of Geoscience Division, CAS, was conferred the IMO Prize. Hui Liangyu, Vice Premier of State Council, was present at the Awarding Ceremony. Mr. Bedritsky, Chairman of WMO, delivered a speech and awarded the prize to Qin Dahe. CAS Scientists Won Prizes from TWAS From Nov. 10 to 13, at the 19th General Meeting of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) held in Mexico, Li Zhensheng, member of CAS, won the 2009 Medal Lecture of TWAS. The Medal Lecture aims to reward the outstanding achievements of those famous scholars in developing countries. Totally three academicians were granted the Medal Lecture of TWAS at this meeting. Liu Youcheng Elected RSC Fellow Recently, Liu Youcheng, member of CAS and professor of the University of Science and Technology of China, received a letter signed by Prof. Jim Feast, Chairman of the Royal Society Chemistry (RSC), in which he was acknowledged that he was elected Fellow Member of RSC. Liu Youcheng is a renowned chemist and founder of the Chinese Physical Organic Chemistry.
