French President Francois Hollande Visits Institut Pasteur of Shanghai

On April 26, His Excellency French President Francois Hollande paid a visit to the Institut Pasteur of Shanghai, CAS, attending the unveiling ceremony of a new building for scientific research. Mr. Kong Quan, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Tu Guangshao, Senior Vice-Mayor of Shanghai Municipality, and Professor Zhang Yaping, Vice President of CAS joined the event. Witnessed by H.E. President Hollande, several agreements were signed on technology transfer by the Institut Pasteur of Shanghai, CAS.

CAS Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth (RADI) Unveiled

On April 22, the Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth (RADI), CAS formally announced its inauguration. Senior Officials, including Wang Qinmin, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of CPPCC, Bai Chunli, CAS President, and Xu Guanhua, former Chinese Minister of Science &Technology attended the meeting and delivered speeches. The event was attended by more than 600 people, including representatives from the international organizations, renowned scientists and experts from international and domestic institutions. As a comprehensive research institute directly under CAS, RADI is the merger of two former CAS institutes: the Institute of Remote Sensing Applications (IRSA) and the Center for Earth Observation and Digital Earth (CEODE), which makes it China¡¯s largest research institution in this field.

Chen Yu¡¯ao Granted Fresnel Prize

Dr. Chen Yu¡¯ao, a young researcher from the National Laboratory for Micro-scale Physical Sciences, University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), received the Fresnel Prize for fundamental aspects by the European Physical Society for his ¡°outstanding achievements in the fields of multi-photon entanglement, quantum communication, quantum computation and quantum simulation based on manipulation of photons and atoms¡±. The award ceremony took place on May 14 during the annual Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO) and the 2013 Conference of International Quantum Electronics Conference (IQEC) in Munich, Germany.

Chen Chuangtian Wins Laudise Prize

Professor Chen Chuangtian, from the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, CAS, received the 2013 Laudise Prize ¡°for his outstanding achievements in the borate nonlinear optical crystals¡± in May. The Laudise Prize is one of the highest awards provided by the International Organization for Crystal Growth.
