Cooperation between CAS and Local Authorities

New Move to Produce Clean Fuel Oil

A significant breakthrough has been made recently in preparation of clean fuel oil by catalytic hydrogenation of coal tar developed by the Institute of Coal Chemistry, CAS, and smooth running for the pilot scale experiments of the whole process has been completed successfully. The results indicated that the performance of the prepared catalysts is stable and the obtained products are gasoline and diesel oil blending component with high quality, of which the performances accord with the national relevant standards for fuel oil. The fast-growing coal-tar resource has not been used effectively for a long time in China, which leads to serious waste of the coal-tar resources and serious pollution of environment. After years of hard work, the project group, in joint efforts with a pilot plant, has successfully produced the stable and highly active proprietary catalysts for preparation of clean fuel oil by catalytic hydrogenation of coal tar, and completed the design package for production. It is now expected to start the construction of a demo plant with capacity of 100,000 tons in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in collaboration with a local enterprise in August 2012.

Heat-resistant Polyimide Fiber Sees Good Market

A project on Heat-resistant Polyimide Fiber, which was completed recently by the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, CAS, passed acceptance check on Sep. 7. The successful completion of the project marked a breakthrough in the industrialization of such technology. After two years of hard work by a project research group headed by Prof. Gao Lianxun since 2008, the bottlenecks on some key techniques on the preparation of solution of Polyamide acid spinning finally got eliminated, and the imide technology for production of Polyamide acid nascent fiber, etc. was successfully developed. The continuous spinning technique of polyimide fiber with home-grown knowledge property and good technical indexes satisfies generally the requirements for environmentally friendly filter materials of the market. The technology has been industrialized by the institute in cooperation with the Changchun Gaoqi Polyimide Material Co. Ltd., and a production line with capacity of 300 tons/year has been completed. The design and construction of a production line with capacity of 3,000 tons is now underway.
