Brief NewsBai Chunli Meets with Arima Akito and Nakamura Michiharu Bai Chunli, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences met with a delegation from Japan led by Arima Akito, former Minister of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and Nakamura Michiharu, President of Japan Science and Technology Agency on March 8, 2013. The year of 2013 marks the 35th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between China and Japan. Both sides expressed the wish to further develop the collaboration in science and technology between scientists of both countries. Detailed discussion was held on potential cooperative programs in science policy and environment protection. Bai Chunli Meets with Prof. Peter Hoj, Vice Chancellor of UQ On March 20, President Bai Chunli met with Prof. Peter H?j, Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University of Queensland (UQ). President Bai congratulated Prof. H?j on his election as the VC of UQ. Prof. H?j said UQ has the largest number of co-authored papers with CAS, compared with the other research organizations. They also discussed the progress of the joint PhD training program and the three joint laboratories between the two institutions. LI Jinghai Present at IAP General Conference On behalf of CAS, Vice President Li Jinghai attended the 2013 IAP General Conference, which was held in Rio, Brazil from Feb. 25-27, 2013, where he delivered a speech on open data at the Science as an Open Enterprise Workshop. Representatives from 55 national or regional academies of sciences attended the General Conference. Through election on Feb. 27, CAS continued to stay with the Executive Committee of IAP for the next term. Zhan Wenlong Visits Australia From Feb. 17-22, CAS Vice President Zhan Wenlong led an astronomical delegation to visit Australia at the invitation of Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIISRTE). The delegation visited the Australian Astronomical Observatory, CSIRO, DIISRTE, Astronomy Australia Ltd, etc. and shared research experience with Australian astronomers on the Square Kilometre Array, the Antarctic astronomy, and radio astronomical research and technology. Zhan also signed the Memorandum of Understanding regarding Astronomy between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education with Dr. Don Russell, DIISRTE Secretary. Tan Tieniu Meets with ICANN CEO On Feb. 17, 2013, Tan Tieniu, Deputy Secretary General of CAS, met with Dr. Fadi Chehade, CEO of ICANN and his delegation. The purpose of Dr. Chehade¡¯s visit was to learn about the progress of CAS¡¯s preparations for the ICANN Beijing Conference. Tan expressed his warm congratulations and full support for the Conference. He welcomed ICANN¡¯s idea of establishing a representative office in Beijing with the support of CAS. Dr. Chehade also suggested enhancing talent exchange to promote the development of business and culture of both organizations. |
