Congratulations from Lu Yongxiang: IMO Prize Goes to Qin Dahe

On June 25, the Executive Council of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) conferred the 53rd IMO (International Meteorological Organization) Prize to Qin Dahe, CAS member at the 60th Meeting. Lu Yongxiang wrote to congratulate Qin Dahe on behalf of CAS and the Presidium of the CAS Academic Divisions.

Bai Chunli Conferred Degrees at Commencement of GUCAS

On July 6 morning, the 2008 Commencement of the Graduate University of CAS (GUCAS) was held, in which 8,245 candidates received their degrees, including 4,489 candidates for doctoral degrees and 3,756 for master's degrees.
Bai Chunli, Executive Vice President of CAS, President of GUCAS and Chairman of its Academic Degree Appraisal Committee and other leaders including Deng Yong, Vice President of GUCAS, etc. were present at the commencement and put the tassels on the hood for the graduates.

Jiang Mianheng Present at COSPAR Assembly

On July 14, the 37th Assembly of the International Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) was held in Montreal, Canada. Jiang Mianheng, Vice President of CAS, headed the Chinese space delegation to attend the assembly. During the Assembly, Jiang conferred the first Jeoujang Jaw Award to James Burch, Chief Scientist of U. S. A. IMAGE Satellite Program, which was jointly established by CAS and COSPAR, at the Opening Ceremony.

Li Jiayang Meets Boerge Diderichsen

On July 3rd afternoon, Li Jiayang, Vice President of CAS, met with Boerge Diderichsen, the visiting Vice President of Denmark Novo Nordisk A/S and his entourage.

Guo Lei Elected Council Member of IFAC

From July 6 to July 11, the 17th World Congress of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) was successfully held in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Guo Lei, member of CAS, was elected new council member of IFAC (with a term of office for 3 years).

Li Can Elected Chairman of IACS

Li Can, research fellow of the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics and member of CAS, was elected President of the Executive Committee of the International Association for Catalysis Societies (IACS) at the 14th International Congress on Catalysis held in Seoul, Republic of Korea from July 13 to July 18, whose term of office is 4 years.

Zhang Kan Elected Vice President of IUPsyS

From July 21 to 25, the 29th International Congress of Psychology was held in Berlin, Germany, in which Prof. Zhang Kan, Director-general of the CAS Institute of Psychology and Chairman of the Chinese Psychological Society, was elected new Vice President of the International Union of Psychological Science (IUPsyS).

Scientists across the Strait: Joint Efforts for Earthquake Prevention

On June 27 and 28, the Across-straits Symposium on Earthquake Prevention and Disaster Mitigation was held in Beijing. There were 24 CAS members including Li Jinghai, Vice President of CAS, and Wang Enge, Deputy Secretary-general of CAS and a group of 10 scientists headed by Liu Zhaohan, Academician of Academia Sinica, Taiwan region, as well as leaders from competent departments of CAS, etc., who attended the symposium. The devastating earthquake in Sichuan on 12 May has caused huge damages to this country and its people. With an objective of learning experience from the earthquake on Sep.12, 1999 in Taiwan, CAS President Lu Yongxiang made a proposal to Prof. Chi-Huey Wong, president of Academia Sinica in Taiwan region to jointly sponsor a symposium on earthquake, which was quickly echoed by Taiwan scientists. At the meeting, the scientists made discussions focusing on issues like causes and mechanism of the disaster, secondary disasters of an earthquake and post-quake reconstruction. During the symposium, Lu Yongxiang, President of CAS, met with all the participants.
