International Cooperation Research & Development Briefs Friendly Visits

Lu Yongxiang Visits Ukraine

Lu Yongxiang, President of CAS, paid a visit to Ukraine from Sep. 20 to 22. During his visit, President Lu and President Paton signed an agreement on S&T cooperation between CAS and NAS of Ukraine. President Paton conferred President Lu an honorary doctoral degree of NAS of Ukraine on behalf of the Presidium of NAS.

Bai Chunli Meets Thai Minister of Science and Technology

Bai Chunli, Executive Vice President of CAS, met with Dr. Pravich Rattanapian, Thai Minister of Science and Technology and his entourage and invited them to dinner, on Sep. 15.

On behalf of CAS, Bai Chunli extended a warm welcome to the visiting Dr. Pravich Rattanapian and his delegation. He said that 2005 marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Thailand. The recent years have witnessed a sound development in the cooperation and exchanges between the two countries in the fields of politics, economy, science and technology.

Dr. Pravich Rattanapian expressed his appreciation to Bai Chumli for the hospitality he received during his visit.

Following the meeting, Bei Chunli, on behalf of CAS, presented paper readers, which were developed by CAS independently, to the Thai Ministry of Science and Technology, which valued about one-million RMB yuan.-6

Jiang Mianheng Meets Director of American Santa Fe Research Institute

On August 11, Jiang Mianheng, Vice President of CAS met Prof. Geoffrey B”¤West, Director of the American Santa Fe Research Institute and his wife, and held a dinner in their honor. Prof. Geoffrey B”¤ West delivered a lecture entitled From Simplicity to Complexity: Growth £¬ Scale £¬ Innovation and the Pace of Life in Cities. More than 40 scientific researchers from the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, CAS , and the Shanghai Institute, of Biological Sciences, CAS listened to the report.-2

Prof. Chen Zhu Meets Director-General of Department of International Cooperation of French Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Chen Zhu, Vice President of CAS, held friendly talks with Mr. Philippe Etienne, Director-General of the Department of International Cooperation of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sept. 19 in Beijing.

During the meeting, Prof. Chen extended a warm welcome to Mr. Philippe Etienne and reviewed the Sino-French S&T cooperation since 1970s. He expressed his hope that the two sides could make further collaborative efforts in such fields as life science, information science, ecology and environment, energy and space to promote a vigorous development in the Sino-French and even Sino-European S&T cooperation.-3

Ceremony Held to Confer CAS Membership to Prof. Jean-Marie Lehn

A ceremony with a lecture was held on Sep. 30 in the Institute of Chemistry, CAS to confer the CAS foreign membership certificate to Prof. Jean-Marie Lehn, a Nobel laureate in chemistry.

Bai Chunli, Executive Vice President of CAS, congratulated Prof. Jean-Marie Lehn warmly and briefed to audience about Prof. Jean-Marie Lehn's scientific achievements. He highly praised Prof. Lehn for his contribution to the scientific and technological development of China, and hoped that he and other foreign members of CAS would play an even greater role in the development of the Chinese science and technology and the development of CAS. Then he conferred CAS foreign membership certificate to Prof. Jean-Marie Lehn. Prof. Jean-Marie Lehn delivered a wonderful lecture to the research staff attending the ceremony.-5

Vietnamese Delegation Visits CAS

From Sep. 23 to 30, at invitation of CAS, Bui Sy Tieu , member of the Central Committee of the Vietnamese Communist Party and Executive Vice Chairman of the Science and Education Committee of the Central Committee of the Vietnamese Communist Party, and Pham Van Guy, Vice President of the Vietnamese Institute of Science and Technology, led a Delegation of Science and Technology on a visit to CAS.
