Sino-German Workshop on Qinhai-Tibetan Plateau Held A grand opening ceremony of the Sino-German Workshop on Joint Research of Geodynamics and Environment Evolution in Qinhai-Tibetan Plateau, which was also the 2 nd Sino-German International Workshop on Qinhai-Tibetan Plateau was held in Beijing on August 14. Winnacker, Chairman of the DFG, and Li Jiayang, Vice President of CAS were present at the meeting. At the opening ceremony, experts from both China and other countries pointed out that, as the third polar of the earth, the Qinhai-Tibetan Plateau is an ideal region to study the formation of the geosphere and probe into the mechanism of the movement of the earth's crust. The hunch of the plateau has a deep influence on the formation of the natural environment of itself, neighboring areas and even the northern hemisphere. As an international hotspot for study, the Qinhai-Tibetan Plateau plays a very important role in the field of international scientific research. At present, scientists from both countries have their funding for the project approved from their own governments respectively and it is expected that more support will be put into the research in future. Joint Integrated Scientific Survey on Lake Baikal Completed The 2005 joint integrated scientific survey made by China and Russia on Lake Baikal was completed successfully on Aug. 29.
