Construction of Namco Integrated Observation Station Completed

Recently, the infrastructure of the Namco Integrated Observation Station of CAS has been completed and put into normal operation. On Aug. 19, the station received for the first time more than 40 people who came for the Sino-German joint scientific survey in the Namco area.

The station now has the capacity to receive 30-50 visiting experts. Equipped with a 10 kilowatt power generation system, a kitchen and a dining-room, the station can provide accommodation and logistics to those who come to work at the station or make scientific survey, which is a guarantee for the follow-up scientific research.

Sino-German Workshop on Qinhai-Tibetan Plateau Held

A grand opening ceremony of the Sino-German Workshop on Joint Research of Geodynamics and Environment Evolution in Qinhai-Tibetan Plateau, which was also the 2 nd Sino-German International Workshop on Qinhai-Tibetan Plateau was held in Beijing on August 14. Winnacker, Chairman of the DFG, and Li Jiayang, Vice President of CAS were present at the meeting. At the opening ceremony, experts from both China and other countries pointed out that, as the third polar of the earth, the Qinhai-Tibetan Plateau is an ideal region to study the formation of the geosphere and probe into the mechanism of the movement of the earth's crust. The hunch of the plateau has a deep influence on the formation of the natural environment of itself, neighboring areas and even the northern hemisphere. As an international hotspot for study, the Qinhai-Tibetan Plateau plays a very important role in the field of international scientific research. At present, scientists from both countries have their funding for the project approved from their own governments respectively and it is expected that more support will be put into the research in future.

Joint Integrated Scientific Survey on Lake Baikal Completed

The 2005 joint integrated scientific survey made by China and Russia on Lake Baikal was completed successfully on Aug. 29. This survey was mainly intended to collect samples of the lake water and planktons, and meanwhile catch fish in different areas to prepare for further studies.

It is reported that both sides are satisfied with the results of the survey. They have decided to make the second joint scientific survey in China in the third quarter of next year. By that time they will make an integrated survey mainly on Lake Taihu, a large shallow-water lake in China.

IAMAS Assembly First Held in a Developing Country

On Aug. 3, the 9 th Assembly of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science was held in Beijing. This is the first time that IAMAS has ever had its Assembly in a developing country . The Assembly has 45 sessions. Strongly supported by IAMAS, 39 young and middle-aged Chinese scientists chaired or co-chaired different sessions.

During the conference, lectures given by several internationally famous scholars were organized on popular science for particularly the teenagers and young people, so that the conference provided an excellent opportunity to popularize meteorology and the atmospheric science for the teenagers and young people and to improve their scientific accomplishment.
