Cai Shuming Honored with a Ramsar Wetland Conservation Award
On June 10, the Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands Secretariat, which consists of 139 contracting countries, announced in Switzerland that the Standing Committee of the Contracting Parties of the Convention on Wetlands voted to grant the Ramsar Wetland Conservation Award, the highest prize, which is rewarded only once in every three years, for the international wetland research, to Cai Shuming, a research fellow of the Institute of Geodesy and Geophysics, CAS, for his outstanding contribution in the research on wetland conservation and its rational use.
Cai Shuming, research fellow of CAS, is also member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Vice Chairman of its provincial conference in Hubei Province, Chairman of the Committee of Population Resources and Environment, member of the China Association for Promoting Democracy and its Director of the Hubei Provincial Association. As a wetland scientist from the Institute of Geodesy and Geophysics, CAS, Cai Shuming has been engaged in the research on limnology, wetland ecology, comprehensive use and protection of natural resources, and comprehensive development of regional agriculture in the Yangtze River Valley. He paid special attention to the environmental variance of the rivers and lakes in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and the rational development, utilization and protection of the wetland resources.
