International Cooperation International Seminar on Tsunami
Disaster Reduction and Early Warning Held in Beijing On Feb. 19-20, CAS and IAP jointly organized
and held the International Seminar on Tsunami Disaster Reduction and Early
Warning in Beijing. Representatives were from 9 countries, including Indonesia,
Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, etc. exchanged opinions with experts
of CAS. At the end of last year, the tsunami in Southeast Asia caused a serious disaster to some countries, said Chen Zhu, Vice President of CAS, at the Seminar. The science circles should provide the international community with professional knowledge and relevant information in terms of disaster reduction action. It is particularly important to launch scientific research in disaster reduction in an effort to reduce similar losses of life and properties in the future. Lu Yongxiang,
Vice Chairman of SCNPC Meets President of European Patent Office On Feb. 4, Lu Yongxiang, President of CAS, who is
also Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's
Congress, met with Mr. Alain Pompidou, President of the European Patent
Office and his entourage, and held dinner in their honor. President Lu
first expressed appreciation for Prof. Pompidou's contribution during
his term to the development of the world science and technology and to
the construction and development of the Chinese systems on patent and
intellectual property rights. Mr. Pompidou expressed that the European Patent Office was prepared to establish an office in China as a focal point. The EU is willing to provide China with help in patent laws. President
Eritrean Visits Institute of Remote-sensing Application On Feb. 19, President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea
paid a visit to the Institute of Remote-sensing Application of CAS. His
entourage included the Eritrean Ambassador to China, Minister of Energy
and Minerals, Minister of Education and Minister of State Development. The guests were shown the demonstration of digital earth prototype system and briefed the institute's in-depth plan based on the existing bilateral cooperation. The two sides discussed the proposals related to their collaborative projects. Sino-American
Experts Discuss Energy and Its Relation with Future of China On March 28, a 9-people delegation headed by Dr. Shirly Ann Jackson, President of Rensselaer Institute of Technology, USA, paid a visit to CAS and gave a lecture on Energy and China's Future. Dr. Li Jiangang, Vice President of the Hefei Institute of Physical Science, CAS, hosted the seminar. More than 10 experts, including He Zuoxiu and Fang Shouxian, members of CAS attended the seminar and had a discussion with guests. กกFirst Recipient
of Albert Einstein Visiting Professorship Gives Lecture in Beijing Under the auspices of the Albert Einstein
Visiting Professorship Program of CAS, Prof. Erwin Neher, a world-famous
biophysicist and 1991 Nobel Prize laureate in biophysics and medicine
from the Max-Planck-Institut for biophysikalische Chemie, delivered a
wonderful lecture on control of neurotransmitter and hormone release by
Ca++ and cAMP in Beijing on March 30. Prof. Erwin Neher is the first beneficiary
of the Program to give a lecture at CAS. Vice President Chen Zhu of CAS
hosted the lecture. |
