¡ñ On July 26, at the ceremony for the establishment of the Beijing Office of HGF, Chairman of HGF Kroll said in his address that cooperation between GSI and the Institute of Modern Physics of CAS could be rated as an example in scientific and technological cooperation between China and Germany.
¡ñ On July 27, Professor Kafatos, director of European Molecule Biology Lab (EMBL) visited Beijing Genome Institute. Both sides discussed the opportunity for cooperation in research on genome. Afterwards, Prof. Kafatos delivered a splendid lecture in the Beijing Genome Institute.
¡ñ From July 27 to 31, Dr. Reeves, Chairman of the Cetacean Expert Group of the World Conservation Union (IUCN), accompanied by Mr. August, an enthusiast and favorer of white-flag dolphin, visited the Institute of Hydrobiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is reported that this is Dr. Reeves's first visit to China Mainland since he assumed the new position in IUCN.
¡ñ During his visit to the National White-Flag Dolphin Reserve in Tianezhou area, Shishou Couty, seeing large number of cowfish, which were leisurely swimming in the green waters, Dr. Reeves affirmed and appreciated the establishment of cowfish breed colony in the original river course of Tianezhou and the ex-situ protection of cowfish migration. He also highly commented the status of natural ecological environment in the original river course of Tianezhou and expressed his sincere respect to the protection workers for their industriousness, hardship and fruitful work.
¡ñ From July 29 to August 1, at the invitation of Prof. Shijie Li of the Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology, Professor G. H.Schleser of Lithosphere Dynamics and the Institue of Chemistry of the German Juelich Research Center and Prof. B. Wunnemann of the Mid-Asia Research Center for Ecological Dynamics of the Geography Department of the Free University of Berlin visited the Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology.
¡ñ On July 30, Dr. Dennis P. Garrity, director general of the International Center for Agroforestry (ICRAF), headed a 4-member delegation to visit the Kunming Institute of Botany. Vice Director Dezhu Li of the Institute met with Dr. Dennis and his entourage.
¡ñ On August 3, at the invitation of Algae Resource and Algae Toxicology Discipline Group of the Institute of Hydrobiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Ueno of Tokyo Science and Technology University of Japan came to the institute to carry out collaborative research on inspection technology of toxin and toxin function of the blue algae.
¡ñ From August 3~4, at the invitation of the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Andrew R. Watkinson, director of the Ecology, Involution and Biology Protection Center of the East Anglia University of the UK, came to visit the garden to give lectures.
¡ñ From August 8 ~ 14, Drs. Lattanzi Mario G. and Bucciarelli Beatrice, astronomers from Turin Observatory of Italy, visited the Shanghai Obvervatory on invitation.
¡ñ On August 9, Prof. W. D. McMillan, a renowned economic geographer and vice president (responsible for learning) of the Oxford University visited the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research on invitation, and delivered a lecture entitled "Intelligent Agent Strategies for Simulating Spatial Economies ".
¡ñ Recently, Prof. Jurgen Suendermann, former director of the Institute of Oceanology of the Hamburger University of Germany paid a visit to the Key Laboratory of Tropical Ocean Environment Dynamics of the South China Sea Institute of Oceanologgy of CAS, and gave a lecture entitled "Towards decadal prediction of the ecological state of a shelf sea: the North Sea case".
¡ñ Recommended by the third World Academy of Sciences and funded by the South to South Cooperation Fund of CAS, two researchers, M. Iqbal and M. Ahmad from the Pakistan Academy of Science and Technology recently paid a visit to the Institute of Metal research and to carry out a 3-month collaborative research.
¡ñ From August 11 to September 3, Prof. Alexander Supin and Prof. Vladimir Popov from the Ecology and Evolution Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences carried out a collaborative research on the hearing ability of cowfish of the Yangtse River in the Institute of Hydrobiology.
¡ñ Recently, a 7-member national scientific and technological delegation of the Laos headed by Noulin Sinbandhit, vice minister of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of the Loas, accompanied by leaders of the Department of Science and Technology of Yunnan Province, paid a visit to the Kunming Institute of Botany.
¡ñ Dr. Michael Karin, a renowned American immunologist delivered a splendid lecture entitled "The IkB Kinase (IKK) and the Control of Immunity£¬Inflammation and Cancer" in the Library of the Institute of Biological Physics.
¡ñ On August 23, at the invitation of the Institute of Chemistry of CAS, Prof. F. Diederich of ETH in Zurich of Switzerland visited the the Institute of Chemistry and gave a lecture entitled "Novel Advanced Materials by Acetylene and Fullerene Scaffolding" in the "Molecule Scientific Forum".
¡ñ On August 24, Prof. Smith, dean of the Department of Material Science of the Oxford University, member of the Executive Committee of the Royal Society and member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, visited the Institute of Metal Research and had discussions with the research staff of the institute.
¡ñ On August 25, a 9-member Thailand delegation of science and technology headed by Korn Thapparansi, minister of science and technology, paid a visit to the Beijing Genome Institute and held talks on matters regarding cooperation in science and technology.
¡ñ On August 26, a 6-member group headed by Prof. Lynn Orr, director of Global Climate and Energy Engineering Center of the US Stanford University paid a visit to the Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion of CAS.
¡ñ On August 28, Prof. Richard Mayden of the St. Louis University of US paid a visit to the Institute of Hydrobiology, and made three lectures entitled "Concept of Biologically Species-Exploration of Biodiversity", "Establishment of Growth Relation in Fish System" and "Cyprinoidei Fish Biological System Tree ".
¡ñ Recently, Dr. Ito Yoichiro of US National Health Institute paid a visit to the Kuming Institute of Botany on invitation, and gave a lecture entitled "New Technology of Countercurrent Color Spectrum" for the relevant scientific research units and universities of Yunnan Province.
¡ñ On September 2, Prof. B. Lindman of the Lund University of Sweden paid a visit to the Institute of Chemisty on invitation and delivered a lecture entitled "Self-assembly in surfactant, amphiphilic polymer and polymer-surfactant systems: Similarities and differences" in "Molecule Scientific Forum".
¡ñ On September 2, Prof. Nikolai Dobretsov, vice president of Russian Academy of Sciences and his entourage, accompanied by Gao Feng, deputy director of the Department of Science and Technology of the Xinjiang Autonomous Region, visited Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography.
¡ñ Recently, Prof. Nagano Hiroo, president of the Hiroshima University of Japan, visited the Institute of Oceanology on invitation and gave a lecture on relevant fields for the research staff of the institute.
¡ñ On September 7, Mr. R. Ramachamdran, secretary general of International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), who is also secretary general of the Congress of Southeast Asian Libraries, visited CAS Library. Mr. R. Ramachamdran appreciated the achievements "the Center" has made and also expressed his gratitude for support by the center to IFLA.
