China Built 4 TeraFlops Supercomputer

Supported by National High-Tech Program (863) and the Knowledge Innovation Project of Chinese Academy of Sciences, "DeepComp 6800" super computer was built at Lenovo Group Limited in November, 2003. This computer has been installed in the main node of China National Grid (CNGrid).

DeepComp 6800 has a peak speed of 5.324 TeraFlops, a Linpack speed of 4.183 TeraFlops, and system efficiency of 78.5%. Experts point out: it's system efficiency and performance of composite data query reach the highest level of world high end computers; it has a number of important innovations in balanced system design, performance tuning, system software and infrastructure of clusters, and grid environments.

On Jan. 2004, Vice President Mianheng Jiang met with Dr. L. Zelenyi, Director of the Institute of Space, Russia, and member of the academy Dr. G. Zherebtsov.

The Lenovo DeepComp 6800 ranks 14th in the world's Top500 list of super computers published in November 16, 2003 and it's system efficiency ranks 2nd among the world high end super computers. This is the best performance of super computers made in China.

New Achievement on Organic Super-high Density Information Storage Materials

Recently, the newest achievement on organic super-high density information storage thin film made by Prof. Yanlin Song in Organic Solid Key Lab of Institute of Chemistry, CAS was reported in Adv. Mater. 15(22),1525-1529. The nano-sized dots can be written on the DMNBPDA thin film, with the average diameter of 1.1 nm corresponding to the information storage density of 1013 bits/cm2. This research result was published in Nanotechnology(13,6,733) and was also reported by the U.S. Technology Research News( Feb.26, 2003).

China-Russia Center for Joint Research of Natural Resources and Ecological Environment is formally opened.
