Academic Centre for CAS Members Opened

The Academic Centre for CAS members was inaugurated on 24th Nov., 2003 in Beijing. Prof. Yongxiang Lu, President of CAS and Prof. Yiyu Chen, Vice President of CAS attended the ceremony. Prof. Lu noted that the missions of the Center

will be two-folded, one is to carry out investigations and discussions on related consultation projects, the other is to develop "CAS Member Forum" and "Academic Saloon" for academic purposes, Prof. Lu specially stressed that the current consultancy work shall emphasize on the drafting of Long-term National S&T Development Strategy, CAS members shall develop an extensive links with scientists, strategist and administrators in various areas and make contribution to the Drafting of the Mid and Long-term National S&T Development Strategy. Some key consultancy projects shall be implemented in accordance with the need of national social, economic and scientific development and the characteristics of CAS to provide forward looking and constructive consultations.

Prof. Lu expressed that CAS will make its best to serve the members and make the center a real home for the members.

Innovation Knows No Limit, Frontier Extends Beyond Any Boundary

The 10th anniversary celebration of the Xiangshan Science Conference was held on Oct. 20 at the Xiangshan Hotel in the western suburb of Beijing.

Initiated in 1993, the Xiangshan Science Conference has been welcoming its 10th anniversary. CAS President Yongxiang Lu, wrote down his remarks with great passion for the anniversary of Xiangshan Science Conference- "Innovation knows no limit, frontier extends beyond any boundary". With its excellent academic contents, broad scientific vision and featured operating mechanism, the Xiangshan Science Conference has developed into an academic workshop series with renowned reputation and made important contributions to China's science development and exerted a far-reaching impact on the decision making process of the various government departments concerned.

CTWF Training Course Held in Beijing

Organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the CTWF (CAS-TWAS-WMO-Forum) Training Course on the "Short-range Climate Prediction Model System and Its Application" was held in Beijing recently. Over 50 students from the Third World Countries, such as Algeria, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mozambique, Mongolia, Philippines, South Africa, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and China, attended the Training Course. Prof. G.O.P. Obasi, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization sent a warm congratulatory letter on the occasion of the opening of the training course.

On November 8, 2003, The Soil and Environment Joint Laboratory Funded by Sino-Germany Science Center was established in Nanjing Institute of Soil Science of CAS

 


Smooth Cooperation Between Turpan Botanical Garden and Prague Botanical Garden

From September 29 to October 19, a delegation from Prague Botanical Garden of Czech Republic headed by Prof. Pavel paid a visit to Turpan Botanical Garden, which is affiliated with the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, CAS. The delegation also made field trips in Xinjiang, invertigating on continental temperate plants and collecting some seed and plant samples.

After 5 years of joint research, the two botanical gardens have accomplished an in-depth understanding and cooperation, which has made a solid foundation for their future academic exchanges and collaborative programs.

Satellite Interface Test Conducted

In order to test that the WFI modulator matches with Ground Station DE-modulator perfectly and to ensure that the Ground Station will receive the reliable data after the launch of CBERS-02 satellite, a product of China-Brazile joint collaboration, technicians of China and Brazil carried out interface test between satellite and ground system at the Beijing Receiving Site of CAS China Remote Sensing Satellite Ground Station successfully.
