Remote-sensing Surveillance on Storage Capacity of Three-Gorges Reservoir in Yangtze River

Since June 10, 2003, the water level of Three-Gorges reservoir has reached 135 meters. On June 13, 2003, the Institute of Remote Sensing Application Research tested the status both before and after water storage through comparative analysis with image before water storage by using Modis remote sensing satellite image.

The water area has not been expanded too much after reaching 135-meter water level because of the sheer precipice along the banks of the river. Generally speaking, the reservoir is 50 to 100 m in width, and in some water areas, it is 200 to 500 m in width.
Due to the water level increase after water storage, some small branches in reservoir area became quite clear in pictures, the width and length have been expanded obviously. (the general width: 50-100m).

Anti-SARSDNA Vaccine Successfully Established

The establishment and effect of the Anti-SARSDNA vaccine developed by Prof. Jinggeng PENG, from the Institute of Zoology, have made crucial progress. The news was released from the Symposium and Exchange on SARS hosted by the Institute of Zoology, CAS on June 29. China has successfully and firstly established and expressed 8 Anti-SARSDNA vaccine.

This vaccine is safe, effective, low-cost with simple purification process. Since its founding in 1990, it has been widely used in the protection of AIDS and tumors. After the evaluation of enzyme clips and DNA sequencing, the targeted genome DNA is proved to be correct.

"R/V Science No.1" Consummation of the Scientific Inspection

After successfully fulfilling the scientific task on "General Circulation in the Yellow and East China Seas and Its Interaction with the Yangtze River Diluted Water", "R/V Science No.1 " of CAS Institute of Oceanology returned back to Qingdao on July 20, 2003. The data acquired in the Inspection are now under analyzing so that the circulation structure of the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass in Summer could be fully understood.

Research Center of Natural Gas-water Compound was Established

The Guangzhou Institute of Energy of CAS conducted a disciplinary adjustment in time and established, recently, a Natural Gas-Water Compound Research Center.
The research center has four research focuses, namely, resource evaluation, exploration and mining, storage and transportation as well as application technology for natural gas-water compound, with four labs in planning. The research of the center covers such fields as the formation mechanism and distribution law of natural gas-water compound, exploration and mining technology for the compound, new technology for natural gas storage and transportation, restraining and prevention technology for water compound in oil industry, energy storage (both heating and cooling) materials and technology for the compound, discharge reduction of CO2-water compound and green-house gases.

Sand Control of the Tarim Desert Road and Construction of the Green Corridor

Jointly undertaken by Tarim Oilfield Branch of PetroChina Company Limited and Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, CAS, the Key Technology R & D Programme of West Development Action Project "Development on Key Technologies for Sand Control of the Tarim Desert Road and Construction of the Green Corridor" has been successfully passed the mid-term appraisal.
After the on-site inspection, the experts unanimously agreed that the research target is explicit, the technical approach is feasible and the project fund was soundly utilized. During the recent two-year's implementation, six research and demonstrative bases have basically been set up, which will provide strong technical support for the accomplishment of the project.
