Award Ceremony of Shing-Tung Yau Scholarship & Scientific Symposium Held in USTC

On Sept. 12, 2003, the award ceremony of Scholarship & Academic Symposium was held in University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). More than 3000 faculties and students attended the ceremony and listened to Prof. Yau's speech. In the ceremony, Prof. Yi Cheng, vice president of the university announced the 9 winners to the 2003 Shing-Tung Yau Scholarship. Prof. Yau made a scientific speech entitled "Geometry: Fascination and Application", in which he introduced the evolution of geometry and the latest development of the study of geometry. Meanwhile, he urged students to improve their comprehensive abilities, equip themselves with the Chinese long and abundant historical culture, and aspire to devote themselves to the country's construction and the development of science and technology.

"Jinxing 2" Returned Home Successfully

Completing the gravity and magnetic survey of Nantong Sheet, Jinxing 2, the scientific survey ship of CAS Institute of Oceanology, successfully returned to Qingdao Qianhai Harbor on Aug. 28, 2003.

Overcoming the poor ocean conditions and all other difficulties, the ship crew and researchers fulfilled the 44-day, two consecutive voyages successfully.

CAS/CAE Members Lectured in Lhasa

Organized by CAS, CAE and other related institutions, the Circuit Lecture Group composed of CAS and CAE members recently gave lectures in Tibet in order to advocate scientific spirit, disseminate scientific knowledge and thus contribute to Tibetan economic development. The Tibet Plateau is a hot topic of scientific research. In the past two decades, about 20 Chinese scientists have been elected members of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Chinese Academy Engineering (CAE) for their outstanding research work on the Tibet Plateau.
