On July 31, Hou Jianguo, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), engaged in a virtual meeting with Marcia McNutt, President of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of the United States, as per invitation.
During the meeting, President Hou highlighted the fruitful outcomes resulting from the collaborative efforts between the two academies in frontier basic research, sustainable development, and the fostering of young scholars’ exchanges. He expressed his desire for an enhanced partnership focusing on sustainable development and other critical areas, promoting increased interactions among young scholars and students. President Hou emphasized the importance of jointly advancing China-US scientific cooperation, global scientific progress, and overall human well-being.
McNutt acknowledged CAS’s efforts in facilitating scientific exchanges between China and the US. She outlined NAS’ recent works and emphasized that scientific advancement represents a shared mission for scientists worldwide. She expressed hope that the two academies would maintain active dialogue, further strengthen cooperation in key areas, and promote the production of more mutually beneficial achievements.
The two sides engaged in in-depth discussions on establishing a regular meeting mechanism, conducting cooperative research based on major scientific and technological infrastructure, and further implementing the US-China Collaborative for Planetary Health.
