CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

I am Ali Bahadur, a Pakistani national. I’m a person who values tradition, family, and community, and believe that these are the foundations for a successful and fulfilling life. During the process of my growing up, my parents instilled in me the importance of hard work and integrity, and these have been the guiding principles of my life ever since. I also understand that having a good attitude and a positive outlook on life can take you further than you ever imagined. I strive to always be determined and never give up, no matter how difficult a situation may be. I’m a person who is willing to learn new things. I’m a great listener, and believe in the importance of empathy and understanding.

It was a dream comes true when I set foot in China for the first time. As a post-doctorate researcher, I was enthralled by the country’s vast culture, beautiful landscapes, and interesting customs. I felt so small compared to the country’s immense size, but I was also filled with excitement to explore it all. The first thing I noticed was the incredible hospitality of the Chinese people. Everywhere I went, locals were incredibly friendly and went out of their way to help me out. I also noticed the impressive architecture in the cities and captivating landscapes in the rural towns.

This is the story of my post-doctorate time in China in 2022, a story of my finding many great friends, having great experiences, and ultimately having one of the best years of my life. It has really been a pleasant experience to be here in China. My study took place at the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources (NIEER) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Lanzhou, a city located in Northwest China’s Gansu Province, and I was able to explore many of the cultural attractions and enjoy the unique cuisine. Lanzhou is known for its handmade noodles, so I made sure to try as many different types of noodles as I could. I even got to learn how to make them from some of the locals.

My stay at CAS’s NIEER was a remarkable experience. This prestigious institute is devoted to fundamental research in the fields of science, and is well-equipped with modern technology and facilities. As a post-doctorate researcher, I had the opportunity to join several research projects and learn firsthand from the experts. I observed the research process, participated in experiments, and gained an understanding of cutting-edge science. The institute also maintains a vibrant community of international researchers and students. I interacted with many of them and developed meaningful relationships.

The people and places I visited, the food I ate, and the experiences I had will always remain with me. I knew that my journey to China had changed me in the best of ways and I will be forever grateful for the opportunity offered by the CAS PIFI.
