The 28th CAS Congress of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) opened in Italy on Nov 27.
A total of 46 new TWAS academicians from 20 countries and regions, including 14 from the Chinese mainland, were added at the congress.
In addition, four scientists from the Chinese mainland were granted TWAS Prizes. The number of countries of origins of all the academicians rose this year from 99 to 104, a record high.
Tang Zhiyong, a scientist from the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology, won the 2019 TWAS Chemistry Prize. Cao Junji from the Institute of Earth Environment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences received the TWAS Astronomy and Space Sciences Prize, Tang Zizhou from Nankai University shared the TWAS Mathematics Prize with an Indian scientist, and Chen Xianhui from the University of Science and Technology of China was awarded the TWAS Physics Prize.
The TWAS Prizes are granted to those scientists who have made impressive contributions to their field in developing countries.
So far, TWAS has a total of 1,221 academicians, including 232 from the Chinese mainland. There have been 66 recipients of TWAS prizes from the mainland.
