The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has launched an Open Innovation initiative to create a better ecosystem for international collaboration. The first pilot program will be based in the city of Hefei, East China’s Anhui Province, with Nuclear Fusion Energy Research as its focus, according to the Opening Meeting of the Pilot Program for Open Innovation (PPOI) held on May 6, 2023.

CAS will select up to five typical research institutes to act as pilot institutes throughout the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), said Zhang Yaping, Vice President of CAS, at the meeting. CAS will guide the PPOI Institute to develop a toolkit of policy and resources to create a friendlier, more inclusive and dynamic ecosystem for international collaboration, said Zhang. PPOI promotes every pilot institute to integrate its advantages into the international cooperation network, policies and resources for excellent science and innovation, in accordance with the “One Institute, One Policy” principle.

The first pilot institute is expected to be a significant platform for future international exchanges and cooperation in the field of Nuclear Fusion Energy Research.
