CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

The Nature Index 2022 Annual Tables were released on June 16, with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) maintaining its status as the leading institution for 10 years in a row.

The University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) made its debut on the top 10 institutions in the list, rising from 13th place to 8th and the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) rose from 11th to 9th place.

The 2022 tables are based on Nature Index data from January 1 to December 31, 2021 and select countries and institutions with high-level research output in natural sciences.

According to the tables, CAS ranks atop with its share of research output more than twice that of the second place — Harvard University. CAS’s Chemistry, Physical Sciences, and Earth & Environmental Sciences rank first and its Life Sciences maintains 5th place as the previous year.

The 3rd to 7th institutions on the top 10 list are Max Planck Society, Germany; French National Center for Scientific Research; Stanford University, USA; Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, Germany; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. Peking University takes the 10th place.

The top 10 countries on the 2022 Tables are the USA, China, Germany, UK, Japan, France, Canada, South Korea, Switzerland, and Australia. China reported a 14.4 percent growth in adjusted share in 2021, the largest such increase among the leading 10 countries.

The Nature Index reflects institutions’ scientific performance and tracks contributions to research articles published in 82 high-quality natural-science journals. It is calculated by the number of research articles and the share of authors’ contributions.
