CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

The opening ceremony of the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD 2022) was held in the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France, on July 8.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is a member of the year’s Steering Committee and a member of the Advisory Committee, the only dual-member unit in China. Hou Jianguo, President of CAS, and other members of CAS recorded a video to celebrate the global launch of the event.

Hou said that major achievements in basic sciences often bring about profound changes in productivity and great progress in society. As many common challenges facing human society today require more scientific and technological breakthroughs, to pay attention to the basic scientific research is to care about the future development of mankind. CAS sincerely hopes to strengthen communication and exchanges with scientists all over the world through this event, and is ready to join hands with the global scientific and technological community to make substantive contributions to global sustainable development through basic sciences.

Shamila Nair-Bedouelle, Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences of UNESCO, presided over the opening ceremony. The Chair of the Steering Committee of the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development, and the Chair of the Scientific Committee of UNESCO’s International Basic Sciences Program delivered speeches.
