CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) held Science Festival 2022 from October 29 to November 6.

With a theme of being curious about the unknown and connecting to the future with science, the festival consisted of more than 100 popular science activities that showcased major progressive scientific and technological innovation achievements that have been made over recent years.

The public were able to get close access to cutting-edge scientific and technological achievements and meet scientists on site, and to take part in activities highlighting integration of science, culture and art. The event aroused curiosity about science, especially among young people.

This year’s Science Festival had two main venues, Beijing and Wuhan, and each city held activities for two days.

Beijing’s activities were held from October 29 to 30 at CAS’s Institute of Botany (South Park of the China National Botanical Garden), and consisted of scientific literature and art performances, experiential exhibitions, scientific experiments, popular science interaction, displays of books and innovation achievement products for the market, as well as high-definition scientific pictures.

Wuhan’s activities were held at CAS’s Wuhan Botanical Garden from November 5 to 6.

The affiliated units of CAS held a number of wonderful and diverse popular science activities focused on scientific fields such as astronomy, soils, geography and lakes, and paleontology.

CAS’s Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry held lectures on earth science at primary and secondary schools in Guangzhou, and displayed fossils and ore specimens for teachers and students.

CAS’s Yunnan Observatories spread astronomical science knowledge in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, Kunming City in Southwest China’s Yunnan Province, with astronomical telescopes, sundials and other instruments.

A seven-hour live broadcast of Beijing’s main science activities was conducted online by well-known popular science experts and scientists each day, allowing the audience to learn the details of the science event.

This science festival was organized and implemented by CAS’s Bureau of Science Communication, and supported by CAS’s Computer Network Information Center.
