CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) have become a notable force in the global science community, ranking fourth among those of all institutions on the 2017 Highly Cited Researchers list, which was released today by Clarivate Analytics, a world-renowned scientific data provider and analytical firm.

According to the 2017 Highly Cited Researchers roster, which is based on work published and cited over the last decade, CAS boasts 44 entries of works cited, a markedly higher number than the average for their fields and only 109 entries behind Harvard, 64 behind Stanford, and 47 behind Germany’s Max Planck Society.

The annually published citation analysis identifies the most frequently cited researchers by determining the extent to which their papers have supported, influenced, inspired and challenged other researchers around the globe. It identifies authors who have consistently won peer approval from international researchers in the form of high citation counts.

The report analyzed science performance metrics and trend data based on scholarly paper publication counts and citation data from the Web of Science, a web-based platform for scientific and scholarly research literature canvassing over 33,000 journals.

More than 3,300 Highly Cited Researchers in 21 fields in the natural and social sciences are included in the list. In addition, 130,000 papers affiliated with 900 institutions were selected this year, according to Clarivate Analytics.

China is gaining fast in terms of research citations, with the highest increase of any nation. “This year, the number of Chinese scientists in the Highly Cited Researchers list is 249, 41 percent more than last year. That makes the nation third in number of highly cited researchers behind the USA and the UK,” said David Pendlebury, Senior Citations Analyst at Clarivate Analytics.
