CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was founded in November, 1949. Comprising a research and development network, a merit-based learning society and a system of higher education, CAS has further defined its development strategy by emphasizing reliance on democratic management, openness and talent in the promotion of innovative research. CAS is committed to taking the lead in achieving leap-forward development in Science and Technology (S&T), in building high grounds for cultivating innovative talents, in establishing high quality S&T national think tank and in building internationally leading research institutes, while focusing on world frontiers of science, major national needs and the national economy.

There were 124 institutions under CAS as of 2012, including 104 research institutes, five universities and supporting organizations, 12 management organizations composed of headquarters and branches, and three other units. Moreover, there are 25 affiliated legal entities and 22 CAS-invested enterprises.

These institutions are home to more than 130 national key laboratories and engineering centers and over 210 observation stations. CAS is also undertaking the construction and operation of more than 20 national mega-science facilities. By the end of 2014, CAS had a staff of 68,700, and 55,000 graduate students.

The “Hundred Talents Program” of the “Pioneer Initiative” is a major project in overseas talent recruitment. The program is composed of three sub programs: Academic Leaders, Technological Excellence, and Young Talents. The Academic Leaders program focuses on eminent leading scientists; Technological Excellence seeks outstanding engineers and technicians; and the Young Talents program is aimed at outstanding young scientists with great potential.

Academic Leaders are those who have working experience as full professors or in equivalent positions in eminent universities, internationally recognized research institutions or enterprises. They are required to have deep and outstanding academic attainments with widely recognized academic influence among their international peers. They are in the full vigor of life with fine ability, and serve as academic and team leaders.


CAS will allocate a 7million yuan($1.1 million) funding package to Academic Leaders( including 3 million yuan for team building )and 1 million yuan for infrastructure construction. Employers may provide extra start-up funding, research platforms and supporting teams on demand.

The Technological Excellence individuals are those middle-aged and young talents who have mastered key technologies and have been working abroad in Research and Development (R&D) of engineering technologies, or working in the construction of big-science facilities, scientific instruments for three or more years. They are capable of solving key technological problems and promoting innovation. A technological excellence recruit will receive a package of 1-2 million yuan and an infrastructure construction funding of 0.6 million yuan from CAS. The employers may provide extra start-up funding, relevant research platforms and supporting teams on demand.

A Young Talent should have a doctorate with three or more years’ research or working experience in internationally recognized universities or research institutions abroad (this condition may be relaxed for exceptional individuals). A young talent should also have already made a name for himself in his research field and demonstrated outstanding research ability and achievements with innovative ideas. Potential for S&T innovation and teamwork spirit are also required. The doctorate should have been conferred no longer than five years before the date of application.

In the first two contract years, CAS will allocate a funding package of 0.8 million yuan and the employer will provide a start-up funding support of no less than 0.5 million yuan. After two years of working at CAS, the young talents will be reviewed and selectively supported by officially recruited in the “Hundred Talent Program” with a funding package of 2 million yuan and an infrastructure construction funding of 0.6 million yuan from CAS (The positions for Young Talents will be released by CAS institutes, please feel free to contact the relevant institutes directly).

The positions of Academic Leaders and Technological Excellence will be released by CAS. The applications will end when maximum recruitment levels are reached.
