In particular, the two sides reached a preliminary understanding on cooperation in biotechnology between CAS and the science community of Pakistan. The Chinese delegation delivered several lectures, such as "Role of CAS in the Development of Science and Technology in China", "Research on Rice Gene in China", and "International Cooperation of CAS".

CAS Vice-President Yiyu CHEN Meets BGCI President Dr. Jackson

On 7 March, CAS Vice-President Yiyu CHEN met Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson, President of Botanical Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) in Beijing. Prof. Chen extended his welcome on behalf of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson for his visit to the CAS, briefed the basics of the academy and the ongoing Knowledge Innovation Program, and expressed the wish to establish cooperative relationship with BGCI. Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson introduced the history and some activities of BGCI. Dr. Le Kang, Director-General of the Bureau of Life Sciences and Biotechnology (BLSB), CAS, presented the research activities of the CAS in life sciences, the organization and functions of BLSB, the configuration, tasks, research goals and major achievements of BLSB-coordinated innovation bases and institutes. Dr. Xingguo HAN, director of the Institute of Botany, CAS introduced the project to-be-launched under the CAS Knowledge Innovation Program, Construction of a Network of Botanical Gardens under CAS. After the meeting, Dr. Le KANG signed the memorandum on cooperation in fields of mutual interest with Dr. Jackson.

Academy Vice-President CHEN Zhu Attends Founding Ceremony

On 23 January 2002, at the invitation of the French Academy of Sciences, Dr. Zhu CHEN, Vice President of the CAS, attended the Founding Ceremony of the France-Chinese Foundation for Science & its Application at the French Parliament House. The Foundation was initiated by Jacques Caen, former director of the French Institute of Blood & Blood Vessels, who has been a good friend to the Chinese people. Many well-known French enterprises have sponsored the initiative. The Foundation is to support Ph.D candidates, postdoctoral fellows and young outstanding scholars from China to study or work at universities and research institutions in France. It also sponsors cooperative research, workshops attended by excellent research groups from both sides. The secretariat of the foundation is set up in the Office of Foreign Relations, French Academy of Sciences and the Bureau of International Cooperation, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Sino-Japanese Joint Research Project on Dust Devil Goes on Wheels

In 2000, a cooperative agreement was signed between the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, CAS and the Japanese Institute of Meteorology for implementing the Sino-Japanese joint research project, "The formation and carrying mechanism of wind-blown sand and its climatic and environmental impacts". The five-year agreement aims to make a comprehensive, systematic and in-depth investigation into the formation mechanism, carrying process and climatic effects of wind-blown sand in north China through joint efforts of Chinese and Japanese scientists. In spring 2002, seven institutes of the CAS will carry out synchronous observation study of sandstorm along its track from Aksu, Xinjiang in the west to Qingdao in the east. To date, a ground observation network of dust devil in China has been fully completed.

Sino-Swiss Joint Laboratory Rebuilds Experimental Device for Gas-Solid Phase Current

The experimental device for gas-solid phase current is the main body of the Sino-Swiss Joint Laboratory for Process Engineering based in China, under the agreement of the Institute of Process Engineering, CAS and the Institute of Process Engineering, Swiss Federal University of Technology. In order to launch the project, the Swiss party sent the whole set of equipment and instrument to China from Zurich in March 2001.The overall design was completed in November 2001, and construction began on 18 December. In April 2002, a linkage trial run was conducted.
After completion of the equipment, a circulating fluidized bed experimental system measuring 411mm in diameter and 12m in height and a downtake experimental system measuring 300mm in diameter and 3m in height will be established. Both will feature the functions of automatic control and automatic data collection. So far, the Orientation Program of the CAS Knowledge Innovation Programme and the International Cooperation Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology have already agreed to sponsor the project.
