Academy Vice-President CHEN
Zhu Attends Founding Ceremony
On 23 January 2002, at the invitation of the French Academy of Sciences, Dr. Zhu CHEN, Vice President of the CAS, attended the Founding Ceremony of the France-Chinese Foundation for Science & its Application at the French Parliament House. The Foundation was initiated by Jacques Caen, former director of the French Institute of Blood & Blood Vessels, who has been a good friend to the Chinese people. Many well-known French enterprises have sponsored the initiative. The Foundation is to support Ph.D candidates, postdoctoral fellows and young outstanding scholars from China to study or work at universities and research institutions in France. Sino-Japanese Joint Research Project
on Dust Devil Goes on Wheels
In 2000, a cooperative agreement was signed between the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, CAS and the Japanese Institute of Meteorology for implementing the Sino-Japanese joint research project, "The formation and carrying mechanism of wind-blown sand and its climatic and environmental impacts". The five-year agreement aims to make a comprehensive, systematic and in-depth investigation into the formation mechanism, carrying process and climatic effects of wind-blown sand in north China through joint efforts of Chinese and Japanese scientists. In spring 2002, seven institutes of the CAS will carry out synchronous observation study of sandstorm along its track from Aksu, Xinjiang in the west to Qingdao in the east. To date, a ground observation network of dust devil in China has been fully completed.
Sino-Swiss Joint Laboratory Rebuilds
Experimental Device for Gas-Solid Phase Current
The experimental device for gas-solid phase current
is the main body of the Sino-Swiss Joint Laboratory for Process Engineering
based in China, under the agreement of the Institute of Process Engineering,
CAS and the Institute of Process Engineering, Swiss Federal University of Technology.
In order to launch the project, the Swiss party sent the whole set of equipment
and instrument to China from Zurich in March 2001.The overall design was completed
in November 2001, and construction began on 18 December. In April 2002, a linkage
trial run was conducted.
After completion of the equipment, a circulating fluidized bed experimental
system measuring 411mm in diameter and 12m in height and a downtake experimental
system measuring 300mm in diameter and 3m in height will be established. Both
will feature the functions of automatic control and automatic data collection.
So far, the Orientation Program of the CAS Knowledge Innovation Programme and
the International Cooperation Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology
have already agreed to sponsor the project.
